Full articleTheodore Eliot "Ted" Deutch (born May 7, 1966) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as chief executive officer of the American Jewish Committee since October 1, 2022. A Democrat, Deutch represented Florida's 22nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2010 to 2022, following prior service in the Florida State Senate (2006–2010) and House of Representatives (2000–2006). In Congress, he chaired the House Ethics Committee from 2015 to 2019 and the Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties from 2019 to 2022, while advocating for measures against antisemitism and in support of Israel, including legislation countering the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. Deutch resigned from the House in September 2022 to lead the American Jewish Committee, an organization focused on combating antisemitism and promoting Jewish interests globally.
In brief
Ted Deutch won a special election in Broward and Palm Beach counties and stayed for six terms, a lawyer who treated constituent phones and ethics rules with the same seriousness. The Florida Senate had been the rehearsal.
When he left the House it was for the American Jewish Committee, a different podium and the same file: how a community argues for itself in public. The move read as a second career, not a retreat.
