Full articleSir Rudolf Ernst Peierls (5 June 1907 – 19 September 1995) was a German-born British theoretical physicist renowned for his pioneering work in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and nuclear physics, as well as his critical contributions to Britain's early atomic weapons program.
Peierls studied theoretical physics under leading figures including Arnold Sommerfeld, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, and Niels Bohr, emigrating from Nazi Germany to the United Kingdom in 1933. He held professorships in mathematical physics at the University of Birmingham from 1937 and later at the University of Oxford from 1963, where he influenced generations of physicists.
In March 1940, Peierls co-authored the Frisch–Peierls memorandum with Otto Frisch, providing the first technical demonstration of a practical atomic bomb's feasibility through uranium-235 chain reactions and estimating a critical mass as small as 6 kilograms. This document catalyzed the Tube Alloys project and influenced the Manhattan Project, where Peierls later led the implosion group at Los Alamos.
Peierls received numerous honors, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1945, knighthood in 1968, and the Enrico Fermi Award in 1980 for his broad impacts on nuclear and solid-state physics. Post-war, he advocated for nuclear disarmament through the Pugwash Conferences.
