Sir Rudolf Ernst Peierls (5 June 1907 – 19 September 1995) was a German-born British theoretical physicist renowned for his pioneering work in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and nuclear physics, as well as his critical contributions to Britain's early atomic weapons program.

Peierls studied theoretical physics under leading figures including Arnold Sommerfeld, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, and Niels Bohr, emigrating from Nazi Germany to the United Kingdom in 1933. He held professorships in mathematical physics at the University of Birmingham from 1937 and later at the University of Oxford from 1963, where he influenced generations of physicists.

In March 1940, Peierls co-authored the Frisch–Peierls memorandum with Otto Frisch, providing the first technical demonstration of a practical atomic bomb's feasibility through uranium-235 chain reactions and estimating a critical mass as small as 6 kilograms. This document catalyzed the Tube Alloys project and influenced the Manhattan Project, where Peierls later led the implosion group at Los Alamos.

Peierls received numerous honors, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1945, knighthood in 1968, and the Enrico Fermi Award in 1980 for his broad impacts on nuclear and solid-state physics. Post-war, he advocated for nuclear disarmament through the Pugwash Conferences.

Rudolf Peierls was born in Berlin to a Jewish family and trained in the new quantum physics while it still felt like a private language. When Germany became uninhabitable he was already in Britain, a young theorist with a gift for estimating the size of a danger.

In 1940, with Otto Frisch, he wrote a few pages that changed the war’s scientific calendar. A critical mass of uranium-235, they argued, might be small enough to carry. The memorandum was classified immediately. It helped create the British Tube Alloys project and later fed Los Alamos.

Peierls worked on the bomb and then spent decades thinking about how not to use the next one. He taught at Birmingham and Oxford, wrote with clarity, and treated younger scientists as colleagues rather than audience.

The Jewish fact is simple and sufficient: a German-born physicist who gave Britain and America a warning they could calculate. He did not boast. He did the arithmetic, then the teaching, then the harder work of living with the answer.
