Full articleOtto Robert Frisch (1 October 1904 – 22 September 1979) was an Austrian-born physicist who became a British citizen and made foundational contributions to nuclear physics, most notably co-discovering nuclear fission and advancing the theoretical basis for atomic weapons. In late 1938, while visiting his aunt Lise Meitner in Sweden, Frisch analyzed data from Otto Hahn's experiments on uranium bombarded with neutrons, concluding that the nucleus had split into lighter elements, releasing immense energy; they termed this process "nuclear fission" after biological cell division. Their 1939 paper explained the mechanism theoretically, estimating the energy output at around 200 million electron volts per fission event, which validated the phenomenon and spurred global research into chain reactions. Frisch's wartime efforts included co-authoring the 1940 Frisch-Peierls memorandum with Rudolf Peierls, which calculated that only about 25 kilograms of enriched uranium-235 would suffice for a supercritical mass to sustain an explosive chain reaction, prompting Britain’s Tube Alloys project and informing the Manhattan Project. Joining the British Mission at Los Alamos in 1943, he led the Critical Assemblies group, conducting experiments to measure neutron multiplication factors and refine bomb designs, including work on plutonium assemblies that informed safety and efficiency protocols. Postwar, Frisch pioneered fast-neutron spectroscopy and crystal diffraction techniques, earning the OBE and FRS, though he later expressed reservations about nuclear proliferation while emphasizing the scientific imperatives that drove his research.
