Story

Sydney Silverman sat in the Commons as a Labour member with one subject he would not drop. Hangings, for him, were a stain a modern country could choose to remove.

The 1960s abolition votes owed much to that stubbornness. A Jewish lawyer from Liverpool made mercy into a legislative project.
