Full articleSidney Patrick Grauman (March 17, 1879 – March 5, 1950) was an American showman, theater owner, and entrepreneur renowned for developing extravagant movie palaces in early 20th-century Los Angeles that helped define Hollywood's golden age of cinema. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Jewish vaudeville performers David and Rosa Grauman, he entered the entertainment industry as a teenager, initially selling newspapers and staging shows in remote areas like the Yukon Territory during the Klondike Gold Rush before establishing himself in San Francisco's theater scene. By the 1910s, Grauman had moved to Los Angeles, where he opened his first major venue, the Million Dollar Theatre, in 1918, followed by the Egyptian Theatre in 1922—the site of the world's first Hollywood premiere—and the El Capitan Theatre in 1926. His most iconic creation, Grauman's Chinese Theatre (now TCL Chinese Theatre), debuted in 1927 with a lavish design inspired by Chinese architecture and quickly became famous for its forecourt where celebrities like Norma Talmadge left handprints and footprints in the concrete, a tradition that endures today. Grauman pioneered the "prologue"—elaborate live performances preceding films—to enhance the cinematic experience, drawing massive crowds and elevating moviegoing to a theatrical spectacle. As a key figure in the industry's growth, he co-founded the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927 alongside figures like Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, and he received an Academy Honorary Award in 1948 for his contributions to entertainment. Grauman's innovative showmanship and opulent venues not only boosted film attendance but also symbolized Hollywood's glamour, earning him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a lasting legacy as one of the era's greatest impresarios.
