Ron Moody (8 January 1924 – 11 June 2015) was an English actor, singer, composer, and writer, renowned for his iconic portrayal of the cunning pickpocket leader Fagin in both the stage and film adaptations of the musical Oliver!, based on Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist.

Born Ronald Moodnick in Tottenham, north London, to Jewish immigrant parents from eastern Europe—his father, Bernard, worked as a studio executive—Moody initially pursued academics, studying sociology, psychology, and philosophy at the London School of Economics with aspirations of becoming an economist. After serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II and working briefly as a clerk at Elstree Studios, he turned to acting in his late 20s, making his professional stage debut in revues and small theatrical roles in the 1950s.

Moody's career breakthrough came in 1960 when he originated the role of Fagin in Lionel Bart's Oliver! at the New Theatre in London's West End, infusing the character with a charismatic, roguish charm that transformed the stereotypical villain into a more sympathetic and theatrical figure; he reprised the part on Broadway in 1962, earning a Tony Award nomination, and in the 1968 film version directed by Carol Reed, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. His performance in the film, which won six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, remains his most celebrated work, though he later expressed mixed feelings about being typecast in the role.

Beyond Oliver!, Moody was a versatile character actor known for playing villains and eccentrics in over 50 films and numerous television appearances, including roles as the shady promoter in Summer Holiday (1963) alongside Cliff Richard and the Prime Minister in The Mouse on the Moon (1963). He also contributed as a composer and writer, penning songs for stage productions and publishing an eccentric memoir, A Still Untitled (Not Quite) Autobiography, in 2013, which chronicled his unconventional path from academia to stardom. Later in his career, he revived Fagin in a 1983 Broadway production and a 1985 Royal Variety Performance, while continuing stage work in shows like The Matchmaker and Peter Pan.

Moody married Therese Blackbourn in 1985; they had six children. He died peacefully at Queen Mary's Hospital in London at the age of 91; his family described him as a "true legend" whose work brought joy to generations.
