Laurence Douglas Fink (born November 2, 1952) is an American financier and the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of BlackRock, Inc., the world's largest asset management firm. As of early 2026, Fink's net worth is estimated at $1.2 billion. Under his leadership since co-founding the company in 1988 with seven partners, BlackRock has expanded from a fixed-income specialist into a global powerhouse managing $13.46 trillion in assets as of the third quarter of 2025.

Fink began his career in 1976 at First Boston, where he rose to lead the firm's bond department and contributed to pioneering mortgage-backed securities trading. After a significant trading loss prompted his departure, he established BlackRock within Blackstone Group before spinning it off as an independent entity in 1995, emphasizing proprietary risk management tools like the Aladdin platform that have become industry standards. The firm's growth accelerated through acquisitions, such as Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006 and Barclays Global Investors in 2009, solidifying its dominance in index funds and ETFs.

Fink has wielded considerable influence through BlackRock's stewardship of shareholder votes and his annual letters to corporate leaders, initially promoting "purpose" and sustainability integration into business strategies, which fueled ESG investing trends but drew criticism for potentially prioritizing non-financial goals over returns. In recent years, amid regulatory scrutiny and political opposition, Fink has shifted toward "energy pragmatism," advocating balanced approaches to energy transitions that include fossil fuels alongside renewables, while BlackRock maintains substantial investments in traditional energy sectors. His firm's scale has positioned him as a key player in global finance, advising governments and shaping market dynamics through passive investment strategies.

In brief

Larry Fink left First Boston after a bad mortgage year and started BlackRock to manage risk with more humility and better systems. The firm became the default holder of other people’s long-term money.

Index funds made it vast; the CEO letter made it vocal. Whether one likes that combination or not, no other manager sits in as many living rooms by proxy.
