Kenneth Lonergan (born October 16, 1962) is an American playwright, screenwriter, and director renowned for his introspective, character-focused works that delve into themes of grief, family dynamics, and moral ambiguity.

Born in the Bronx, New York City, Lonergan grew up in a Jewish family and attended the progressive Walden School, where he began writing in high school. He initially studied at Wesleyan University before transferring to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, from which he earned an M.F.A. in dramatic writing.

Lonergan's early career in theater included his first produced play, The Rennings Children, selected for the 1982 Young Playwrights Festival curated by Stephen Sondheim. His breakthrough came with This Is Our Youth (1996), a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production that captured the aimless angst of affluent young adults in 1980s New York and has since been revived multiple times, including on Broadway in 2014. Other notable plays include Lobby Hero (2001), which earned Drama Desk Award nominations, and The Waverly Gallery (2000), a poignant family drama that garnered Lonergan a Pulitzer Prize finalist nomination and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play in 2019. In 2024, his play Hold On to Me Darling was revived off-Broadway to critical attention, starring Adam Driver.

Transitioning to film, Lonergan co-wrote the screenplay for Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York (2002), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His directorial debut, You Can Count on Me (2000), which he also wrote, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, establishing his reputation for naturalistic, emotionally raw storytelling. Subsequent films include the ambitious Margaret (2011), a sprawling drama about guilt and urban alienation that faced production challenges but was critically reevaluated upon release, and Manchester by the Sea (2016), for which Lonergan won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received a Best Director nomination. His work often draws from personal experiences, blending humor and devastation to portray ordinary people navigating extraordinary emotional turmoil.
