Born in Mexico City to Jewish parents, Bekenstein earned his bachelor's degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1969 and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1972 under John Archibald Wheeler, focusing on general relativity. He later joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as the Polack Professor of Theoretical Physics, where he spent much of his career advancing quantum gravity research.
