Full articleJonathan Glazer (born 26 March 1965) is an English film director and screenwriter who rose to prominence through innovative music videos and commercials before directing a limited number of feature films noted for their stylistic experimentation and thematic depth.
Glazer's early career included directing acclaimed music videos, such as Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" and Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity," the latter winning multiple MTV Video Music Awards and contributing to his recognition as MTV Director of the Year in 1997. His feature film debut, Sexy Beast (2000), earned critical praise and a British Independent Film Award for Best Director, while subsequent works like Birth (2004) and Under the Skin (2013) garnered attention for their unconventional narratives exploring identity, desire, and alienation.
Glazer's fourth feature, The Zone of Interest (2023), won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2024, adapting Martin Amis's novel to depict the domestic life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his family adjacent to the camp. In his Oscar acceptance speech, Glazer stated that he and his colleagues "refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people," a remark that provoked widespread condemnation from Jewish organizations, Holocaust survivors' groups, and over 450 Jewish film professionals who described it as morally reprehensible, factually incorrect, and minimizing the Shoah while excusing terrorism.
