John King is an American high school football coach and athletic director renowned for his long tenure as head coach of the Longview High School Lobos in Longview, Texas, where he has built a dominant program in Texas high school football, securing a state championship and consistent playoff success.

King began his coaching career in 1972 and achieved early distinction as the youngest head football coach in Texas 5A history at age 24, prior to joining Longview High School in 2000 as offensive coordinator and assuming the head coaching role in 2004. Over his 22 seasons as head coach through 2025, he compiled an impressive record of 240 wins and 52 losses, including a 122-11 mark in district play, and never missed the playoffs. His teams captured 17 district championships and advanced to three state championship games in 2008, 2009, and 2018, culminating in a state title victory in 2018 that solidified the Lobos' dynasty status.

In recognition of his contributions to Texas high school athletics, King is set to be inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2026. Beyond football, he has served as Longview High School's athletic director, overseeing a broad range of programs while emphasizing team philosophy and community involvement. In 2025, King faced a personal health challenge after being diagnosed with mouth cancer shortly before the season opener, stepping away temporarily but completing treatment by December and celebrating with his team. This article focuses on King's achievements in Texas high school football, distinguishing him from other notable figures sharing the name, such as the CNN anchor.

In brief

John King is a common name and a specific craft. This entry points to the cable journalist who made a magic wall into a civic instrument, walking counties while the country waited.

Because the encyclopedia page is a fork in the road, the cautious bio stops there: a reporter whose election nights became part of how Americans learned who won.
