Full article

Harry Morris Warner (born Hirsch Mojżesz Wonsal; December 12, 1881 – July 25, 1958) was a Polish-born American film studio executive, the eldest of four brothers who co-founded Warner Bros. Pictures in 1923, and served as its president until 1956.

Under Warner's leadership, the studio revolutionized the motion picture industry by investing in synchronized sound technology, introducing Vitaphone in 1926 and producing The Jazz Singer in 1927, the first feature-length film with spoken dialogue, which propelled Warner Bros. from near bankruptcy to prominence. He focused on business operations, distribution, and legal matters, while brothers Albert handled finances, Sam technical aspects, and Jack production, though familial tensions culminated in Jack's maneuvers to seize control, leading to the brothers' sale of shares in 1956.

Warner distinguished the studio with socially conscious films addressing Depression-era hardships, such as The Public Enemy (1931) and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), and took an early, aggressive stance against Nazism by withdrawing operations from Germany in 1933, funding anti-Nazi efforts, and releasing Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939), the first major Hollywood film condemning Hitler, despite facing Senate scrutiny for alleged interventionism. These decisions, rooted in Warner's Jewish heritage and opposition to fascism, combined moral conviction with commercial success, as evidenced by rising studio profits through the 1940s.
