Born in Koblenz, Germany, Kahn immigrated to the United States with his family in 1891 at the age of five, settling in Chicago where he grew up in a Jewish household. After working as a clerk following his education, he began his songwriting career in the 1910s, initially contributing lyrics to vaudeville acts before establishing himself as a prolific figure in the music industry during the 1920s.
Kahn's most notable collaborations included partnerships with composers such as Walter Donaldson, with whom he co-wrote hits like "Makin' Whoopee" (1928) and "It Had to Be You" (1924), as well as Isham Jones for "I'll See You in My Dreams" (1924) and Vincent Youmans for songs in Broadway shows like Wildflower (1923). His work extended to Hollywood in the 1930s, where he provided lyrics for films including Flying Down to Rio (1933) and San Francisco (1936), often collaborating with figures like George Gershwin and Harry Warren.
In addition to his professional successes, Kahn married singer and songwriter Grace LeBoy in 1916, with whom he occasionally collaborated; the couple had two children. He continued writing until his death from a heart attack in Beverly Hills, California, at age 54. Kahn's legacy endures through his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, recognizing his role in shaping American popular music with timeless hits like "Carolina in the Morning" (1922) and "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (1931).
