Gene Simmons (born Chaim Witz; August 25, 1949) is an Israeli-American rock bassist, singer, songwriter, actor, entrepreneur, and television personality, best known for co-founding and serving as the bassist and co-lead vocalist of the hard rock band KISS under his stage persona "The Demon". Born in Haifa, Israel, to a Hungarian Jewish mother who survived the Holocaust, Simmons immigrated to the United States at age eight with his single mother and was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he adopted the name Gene Klein before changing it to Simmons. He co-formed KISS in 1973 with Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley, developing the band's signature kabuki-inspired makeup, elaborate stage costumes, pyrotechnic performances, and aggressive merchandising strategy that generated unprecedented revenue for a rock act, including billions in licensed products and tours. Beyond KISS, Simmons released solo albums, starred in films and the reality series Gene Simmons: Family Jewels, and launched diverse business endeavors such as record labels, cannabis promotion, and trademark filings for concepts like money bags and historical symbols, often drawing criticism for perceived over-commercialization. His public persona includes boasts of extensive sexual encounters, defenses of wealth accumulation, and rejection of traditional friendships, positioning him as a self-made figure emphasizing personal responsibility and market-driven success amid KISS's 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and eventual catalog sale.

In brief

Born Chaim Witz in Haifa to Hungarian Jewish parents, Simmons was raised by his mother, Flóra Klein, a Holocaust survivor, and immigrated to New York at eight. He took the name Gene Klein, later Simmons, taught school briefly, and then built a stage character — the Demon — out of comics, makeup, and bass.

With Paul Stanley he founded KISS, whose live spectacle and brand licensing became a business as large as the records. Solo albums, film roles, and the reality series Gene Simmons Family Jewels followed. The immigrant kid from Haifa made a fortune by treating rock as both music and mark.
