Full articleGary Barber (born 1957) is a South African-born American film producer, media executive, and thoroughbred horse racing owner renowned for his leadership in Hollywood's major studios and production companies.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Barber earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand before transitioning from a finance background into the entertainment industry. His early career included senior executive roles at Vestron Pictures and Morgan Creek Productions, where he contributed to films such as True Romance (1993) and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994).
In 1998, Barber co-founded Spyglass Entertainment with Roger Birnbaum, establishing a prominent independent production company that financed and produced a string of commercial and critical successes, including The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000), Seabiscuit (2003), and Memoirs of a Geisha (2005). After co-heading Spyglass until 2010, Barber joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) as co-chairman and CEO following the studio's bankruptcy restructuring, overseeing key initiatives such as the $1 billion acquisition of full ownership of Epix in 2017 and securing a $1 billion revolving credit facility in 2016. His tenure at MGM ended abruptly in 2018 amid reported internal conflicts over creative direction.
In 2019, Barber relaunched the company as Spyglass Media Group, where he continues to serve as chairman and CEO, focusing on premium content development, production, financing, and distribution across film, television, and streaming platforms. Under his leadership, Spyglass has managed high-profile franchises like the rebooted Scream series (2022–present) and formed strategic partnerships, including a 2022 equity investment from Lionsgate that included acquiring 200 films and an 18.9% stake in the company. Additionally, Barber is an accomplished thoroughbred owner and breeder, having won over 1,000 races in partnerships, serving on the board of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, and receiving the Outstanding Owner award at the 2024 Jockey Club of Canada Sovereign Awards.
In brief
Barber came to Hollywood from South Africa and learned how to package pictures that travel. Spyglass was the independent he built to do that work.
Later he took the chair at MGM, a storied studio that needed a producer's nerve. The credits sit behind the logo more often than in front of it.
