Erica Jong (born Erica Mann; March 26, 1942, New York City) is an American novelist, poet, and satirist. She achieved prominence with her 1973 semi-autobiographical novel Fear of Flying, which frankly explored female desire and independence through the protagonist Isadora Wing's quest for sexual freedom. The book popularized the term "zipless fuck" to describe an impersonal, liberating sexual encounter devoid of emotional or social complications.

Fear of Flying sold over 37 million copies worldwide and was translated into more than 45 languages, marking a commercial and cultural milestone that challenged taboos around women's sexuality amid the sexual revolution. Its explicit content and advocacy for female sexual agency generated controversy, positioning it as a key text in second-wave feminism while drawing criticism for prioritizing hedonism over relational depth. Jong, who began her career with poetry collections that earned the Bess Hokin Prize from Poetry magazine, continued producing works including sequels like Fear of Dying (2015), essays, and memoirs, alongside international literary awards such as the Fernanda Pivano Prize. Her oeuvre reflects a satirical lens on marriage, motherhood, and aging, often blending confessional style with cultural critique.

In brief

Erica Jong wrote poems and satire before a single novel made her name travel farther than most careers. Fear of Flying treated a woman’s inner life as material worthy of comedy, hunger, and nerve.

The book’s fame never quite flattened her into a slogan. She kept publishing novels, essays, and verse, a New York writer who treated candor as a craft, not a stunt.
