David Drew Pinsky (born September 4, 1958), professionally known as Dr. Drew, is an American board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist who has built a career as a media personality focused on public education about health, relationships, and substance use disorders. Pinsky earned his undergraduate degree from Amherst College and his M.D. from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, followed by residency training in internal medicine at the same institution, where he later served as chief resident and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry. He first gained widespread recognition co-hosting the nationally syndicated radio program Loveline from 1984 to 2016, fielding listener calls on topics including sexual health, dating, and early addiction signs aimed primarily at adolescents and young adults. Transitioning to television, Pinsky executive produced and hosted VH1's Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew (2008–2012), documenting the treatment of high-profile individuals for dependency issues, which drew millions of viewers and sparked debates on the ethics of reality TV in therapeutic settings, alongside spin-offs like Sober House. Pinsky has authored several books, such as Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again (2003), detailing rehab experiences, and The Mirror Effect (2009), analyzing how celebrity narcissism influences public behavior and vulnerability to addiction. In addition to maintaining a private practice treating thousands of patients, he has lectured on addiction and contributed to policy discussions on the opioid epidemic and mental health crises. His media career has included HLN's Dr. Drew On Call (2011–2019), which ended following public statements questioning the scientific basis for prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns and their disproportionate harms, and ongoing podcasts like The Adam and Dr. Drew Show. More recently, Pinsky hosts Health Uncensored with Dr. Drew on Lifetime, exploring evidence-based advancements in medicine and critiques of institutional health policies. Pinsky's forthright commentary has led to controversies, including 2012 allegations of receiving $275,000 from GlaxoSmithKline to promote antidepressants' sexual side effects on air, though he maintained transparency in disclosures, and backlash from progressive media outlets over his skepticism toward certain public health mandates.

In brief

Drew Pinsky kept a real practice while building a media life that started on late-night radio. Loveline, with Adam Carolla and others, taught a generation to ask a doctor the questions they would not ask at dinner.

Television multiplied the brand — HLN, VH1, podcasts. The useful part was always the same: an internist willing to talk about craving in public.
