Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family and raised in Matawan, New Jersey, Emhoff earned a J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law and built a career as an entertainment litigator, representing clients at firms such as DLA Piper before pausing his practice for the vice presidency and resuming at Willkie Farr & Gallagher in 2025. Previously married to film producer Kerstin Emhoff from 1992 until their 2009 divorce, with whom he has two children, Emhoff began dating Harris in 2013 and married her in 2014; their union produced no children, positioning him as stepfather to hers.
